AI and Assessment: What Every Team Needs to Know in 2024

Let’s be real - AI is everywhere, and it’s here to stay. In 2024, AI is no longer some futuristic concept but a tool that’s reshaping how we work, learn, and make decisions. For assessment teams, this could mean the difference between sticking with outdated methods and embracing cutting-edge technology that saves time, increases accuracy and enhances the whole assessment experience.

So, I really enjoyed this webinar from Alex Scharaschkin, Director of Assessment Research and Innovation at AQA, who shared results from the extensive research his team have carried out into the current and future role of AI in assessment. Some key bits that resonated with me:

AI Basics - No Need to Fear the Complexity

Understanding AI, especially generative models like ChatGPT, can seem intimidating, but the webinar broke it down in a way that anyone can grasp. AI isn't just about crunching numbers; it’s about working with data to mimic human creativity and problem-solving. In the context of assessments, this means AI can now help draft questions, evaluate responses, and streamline the testing process.

Balancing the Pros and Cons of AI

Like any new tool, AI comes with its strengths and challenges. On the plus side, it can speed up workflows, reduce human error, and provide fresh ways to analyse results. However, there are valid concerns, especially around bias in AI-generated results. The integrity of exams - particularly high-stakes ones - can be affected if AI isn't implemented carefully. As Alex noted, we must use AI responsibly, keeping a close eye on maintaining the credibility of certifications. It’s not about replacing human judgment but enhancing it, ensuring that assessments remain fair and robust.

Real-World Applications: What AQA is Doing

This wasn’t just theory - AQA is already putting AI to work in the UK. They shared examples of how they’ve integrated AI into their assessment processes, from automating routine tasks to analysing test outcomes more deeply, which you can see in the webinar. The research so far shows promise in making assessments not only more efficient but also more insightful. And while AI can take over repetitive tasks, the human element remains essential in ensuring quality and fairness. This combination of AI and human oversight is key to future-proofing assessments.

What’s Coming Next for AI in Education

Looking ahead, the webinar painted an exciting picture of the future. We can expect even more sophisticated AI tools that will further enhance test creation, delivery, and evaluation. This means more personalised assessments that can adapt to individual learning styles and needs, a game-changer for both students and educators alike. However, with these advancements come new responsibilities - keeping assessments secure and minimising any unintended consequences from AI use. The takeaway? Stay informed and stay ready, because the future of assessment is evolving, and AI is leading the charge. And remember, AI might be getting smarter, but it’s still your expertise, creativity, and empathy that will make the biggest difference.

As you reflect on the role of AI in assessments, consider how it can complement your work, streamlining processes while still valuing human intuition and judgment. AI may be advancing rapidly, but it’s your expertise and empathy that will continue to drive meaningful and trustworthy assessments. How might you integrate this powerful tool to elevate your own practices while maintaining the integrity of your work?
